Hands offering food to another pair of hands in need, symbolizing generosity and giving to the poor during fasting. The warm, softly lit background evokes kindness and spiritual blessings associated with this act.

God wants us to give to the poor when we’re on a fast. I wasn’t sure how else to say it—but yes, it’s actually part of the process. We know that God loves the poor and often reminds us in scripture to care for the orphan and the widow. But when it comes to fasting specifically, God makes it clear that giving to the poor is essential.

When we fast, it’s often for a breakthrough in our lives or on behalf of others, especially when prayer alone may not be enough. In Isaiah 58:6, God says, “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?” Then, in verse 7, He continues, “Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh?”

Here, we see that God specifically calls us to care for the poor while fasting. It’s a principle of fasting and a key to spiritual breakthrough. Proverbs 19:17 says, “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and He will repay him for his deed.” So when we give to the poor, we’re essentially giving to God, and God honors that. By humbling ourselves through fasting and prayer and actively giving to those in need, we align with God’s Word, which always fulfills its purpose (Isaiah 55:11). With this approach, we can trust that whatever we are seeking God for will be answered.

Verses 8 and 9 of Isaiah 58 illustrate this beautifully: “Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’”

When you combine giving to the poor with fasting and prayer, expect supernatural breakthroughs. Don’t just take my word for it—this is God’s Word, and we know God is a God who cannot lie (Titus 1:2).

So as you prepare for your next fast, also make plans to give to the poor. Not only will you experience the spiritual and physical benefits of fasting, but you’ll also be a blessing to others. And remember, “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). So whatever you give, do it with a cheerful heart.

Shalom,

Lyn
